Artist Statement
As a child, I had a neighbor who was distinctly orange — his hair, his VW Beetle, and even his name. I remember being amazed by his uniformity, so I asked my friend if she thought his name was orange as well. That’s when I discovered that I saw things differently from other people.
I have synesthesia. It manifests in many forms — music is experienced as colors shifting in and out of view, letters and numbers have distinct tones and assigned personalities, and groups of digits are mentally ordered and arranged into column charts.
My work explores music through synesthesia. I recreate the light flutters of delicate piano keys, the vibrant hues of funk, and the shades of distinctive timbres. My work invites the viewer on a journey through the movement, textures, and colors of sounds.
